Martha's Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard, the largest resort island in New England is shaped like a triangle. Located seven miles off the coast of Falmouth, Martha's Vineyard is isolated enough to escape the busy summer season on Cape Cod, but still it is often chosen destination of tourists who are looking for a place to relax. The Vineyard grew as a tourist destination primarily because of its very pleasant summer weather and the beautiful beaches. The most attractive thing for the visitors is its natural beauty.
The Vineyard has 124.6 miles of tidal shoreline. There are 6 towns on Martha's Vineyard; three up-Island towns, Aquinnah (Gay Head), Chilmark and West Tisbury, and three down-Island towns, Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. Martha's Vineyard is part of the County of Dukes County, which also includes the Elizabeth Islands and Noman's Land.
The summer season runs from June to the end of August. In August the Agricultural Fair takes place on the island. Other popular attractions include the annual Illumination festival in Oak Bluffs; Katama Farm in Edgartown; and the Flying Horses in Oak Bluffs, the oldest carousel in the United States.
